Overview
Masquerade (2024) is O.O. Sangoyomi's debut novel, a historical fantasy reimagining of the story of Oya, the Yoruba orisha of wind and transformation, set against the backdrop of the historical Oyo Empire in what is now southwestern Nigeria. The book follows a blacksmith's daughter abducted and thrust into a dangerous position of power at the Oyo court, drawing on Yoruba mythology and history rather than the Western European settings more common to the genre, and reworking Oya's own mythic transformation from a mortal woman into a powerful, wind-wielding deity as its central arc.
