Overview
Stephen R. Donaldson's novel in two volumes (1986-1987), written between the second and third Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, follows Terisa Morgan, a New York woman so unsure of her own existence that she surrounds herself with mirrors, when an apprentice Imager comes crashing through one of them from Mordant, a medieval kingdom whose magic, Imagery, works through mirrors that are both windows and doors. In the castle of Orison, with its withdrawn king, mad wizard and scheming arch-Imager, and in the wars of Alend and Cadwal that follow, Terisa discovers a talent of her own. Donaldson has cited Peake's Gormenghast as the book's model; a separate world from the Land of the Covenant books.
