Overview
Subtitled "A Faerie Romance for Men and Women": Anodos, a young man, is pulled into a dreamlike fairy realm in search of his ideal of female beauty, pursued throughout by his own shadow, in George MacDonald's 1858 novel. Structured more as a sequence of loosely connected dreamlike episodes than a conventional plot, Anodos moves through the fairy realm's forests, statues, songs and enchanted mirrors, testing and repeatedly failing his own understanding of love, vanity and self-knowledge along the way. Widely credited as one of the founding texts of modern fantasy, Phantastes directly influenced later writers including C. S. Lewis, who described reading it as a kind of conversion experience for his own imaginative life, and J. R. R. Tolkien, both of whom acknowledged MacDonald's dreamlike, morally-inflected fairy realms as a model for their own secondary-world fiction decades later.
