Overview

Indra Das's 2015 debut, winner of the Lambda Literary Award, opens on a moonlit evening in Kolkata when a stranger tells the professor Alok that he is half werewolf, and sets him to transcribing a bundle of notebooks, parchments and scrolls of once-living skin. Out of them comes the chronicle of a race of shape-changers, werewolves, rakshasas or djinn by other names, and the story of Fenrir, a wanderer among a pack of European shape-shifters in seventeenth-century Mughal India, and Cyrah, the human woman he wrongs, whose fates are bound to the stranger's own. A dark fantasy of Mughal-era and present-day India that combines historical fiction, fantasy and horror.
