Overview

The Lost Years of Merlin is a completed middle-grade fantasy pentalogy (1996–2000) by American author T. A. Barron, imagining the forgotten childhood of the boy who becomes Merlin of Arthurian legend. An amnesiac boy washes ashore on the coast of Wales with a woman claiming to be his mother, and after discovering a latent gift for magic and losing his sight while saving her life, crosses into Fincayra, a mysterious island between the mortal world and the spirit world. There he masters seven ancient arts of wizardry, confronts a fire dragon and other supernatural threats, and, across the second through fifth volumes, gradually uncovers his own true parentage and takes up the name Merlin while working to heal Fincayra from a spreading blight and standing against the rival spirit Rhita Gawr. This canon treats the pentalogy as a complete, self-contained story in its own right rather than merely an opening slice of the author's larger 13-book Merlin Saga: it was written and published as a closed five-book arc with its own beginning and ending, and the later continuation the author added afterward is a separate, further installment of the wider saga rather than required reading for this story.

The original, complete five-book pentalogy (1996-2000); the opening arc of the author's larger 13-book Merlin Saga. The later 'Merlin's Dragon' trilogy (2008-2011) and subsequent trilogies continue the wider saga but are a separate, later-published continuation, not part of this closed pentalogy, and are out of scope for this admission.
