Overview
Michael Ende's The Neverending Story (1979) is a metafictional portal fantasy in which Bastian Balthazar Bux, a lonely boy who steals a strange book from a shop, is drawn into, and must save, the dying world of Fantastica as it is consumed by the encroaching Nothing. The German original, Die unendliche Geschichte, was printed in a two-color format: sections set in the real world in one ink, sections set within the book-within-the-book in another, a device largely lost in most translations and film adaptations. Ende, already established as a children's author, wrote it as a single standalone novel rather than a series, and it became an international bestseller, translated into more than 40 languages. It is frequently read as an allegory about the power and danger of imagination and escapism, and it remains one of the best-known works of German-language fantasy literature of the twentieth century.
