Overview

The Nevernight Chronicle is a completed dark-fantasy trilogy following Mia Corvere, an assassin trained at a murderous academy in the sunless empire of Itreya, as she pursues revenge against the men who destroyed her family. It is Jay Kristoff's second, entirely separate universe in this canon alongside Empire of the Vampire, sharing no setting, characters, or continuity with it. Opening with Nevernight (2016), the trilogy follows Mia through a lethal assassins' academy modeled loosely on dark, satirical grimdark conventions, complete with a running set of sardonic footnotes commenting on the empire's history and Mia's own unreliable narration. The trilogy, illustrated throughout and known for its dense, stylistically ornate prose, concluded with Darkdawn (2019), completing Mia's revenge arc across a setting whose central astronomical quirk, near-permanent daylight from multiple suns, sets it visually and tonally apart from Kristoff's later Empire of the Vampire.
