Overview
A retelling of the Welsh legend of Blodeuwedd, a woman made of flowers and transformed into an owl as punishment for betrayal, from the Mabinogion's Fourth Branch: three teenagers sharing a remote Welsh valley house find themselves compelled to re-enact the ancient love-triangle tragedy across generations. Alan Garner's 1967 novel won both the Carnegie Medal and the inaugural Guardian Children's Fiction Prize, one of only a handful of books to win both awards between 1966 and 2011, and was later named among the ten most significant Carnegie winners for the medal's 70th anniversary in 2007. It was adapted into a Granada Television serial in 1969, filmed in the actual Welsh valley the story is set in, and later dramatized for Australian and BBC radio. Alan Garner's second universe in this canon (alongside The Weirdstone of Brisingamen/the Alderley sequence; confirmed a wholly separate, unrelated story with no shared characters or continuity).
