Overview
The Secret Market of the Dead is a standalone gothic historical fantasy novel by Giovanni De Feo (2025, Saga Press), set in Luceria, an 18th-century town in the kingdom of Naples, where an enigmatic realm known as the Night, ruled by seven immortals, exists alongside the ordinary daytime world. It follows Oriana, a young woman who discovers she can cross into the Night and stumbles on a clandestine marketplace trading a form of magical power called Moira, as she seeks a way out of a life constrained by her father's choice of her twin brother, rather than her, to inherit the family forge. Drawing on Italian folklore and myth, the novel was a finalist for the 2026 World Fantasy Award for Best Novel.
