Overview
The Thief Lord is a standalone novel by Cornelia Funke about a band of orphaned runaways hiding among the canals of Venice, led by a mysterious masked boy who calls himself the Thief Lord. First published in German as Herr der Diebe in 2000, with the English translation by Oliver Latsch following in 2002, the novel follows two newly arrived orphan brothers taken in by the Thief Lord's gang, and a detective hired by their aunt to track them down, as the group becomes entangled with a magical merry-go-round rumored to be able to change a rider's age. Funke sets the story against a richly detailed, slightly heightened version of real Venice, using the city's canals, hidden courtyards, and crumbling palazzos as a backdrop for both the gang's daily survival and the fantastical object at the plot's center. The novel helped establish Funke's international reputation before Inkheart.
