E.R. Eddison's The Worm Ouroboros (1922) is a high-archaic-prose epic of war between the Lords of Demonland and the Kingdom of Witchland, set on a fantastical version of the planet Mercury and framed by a brief device involving a present-day dreamer. Written in a deliberately seventeenth-century-inflected English drawing on Eddison's own work translating Norse sagas, it predates The Lord of the Rings by roughly three decades; J.R.R. Tolkien admired the book while criticizing its invented names as slipshod, and Ursula K. Le Guin praised its archaic language as "exact, clear, powerful." The novel closes on a cyclical note, with its victors realizing their triumph rings hollow once they have no worthy opponents left. Only tangentially related to Eddison's later, separate Zimiamvia trilogy via a brief shared cosmological reference, not a shared setting or plot.
