Overview
Thieves' World is a shared-world anthology series created by Robert Lynn Asprin in 1978, with Lynn Abbey joining as co-editor from its early volumes, in which many science-fiction and fantasy writers, including Poul Anderson, C.J. Cherryh, Marion Zimmer Bradley, and John Brunner, contributed stories set in the same invented city, the port town of Sanctuary. Beginning with Thieves' World (1979) and Tales from the Vulgar Unicorn (1981), the wider franchise eventually grew into a full run of anthologies through the 1980s, with a further relaunch by Abbey in the 2000s, following a rotating cast of thieves, mercenaries, priests, and sorcerers navigating the same crowded, morally gray underworld from each contributor's own perspective. It is widely credited by genre historians as the series that pioneered and set the template for the shared-world anthology format, in which independent authors write within a single collaboratively built setting, a model later adopted by numerous other franchises.
