Overview
Thomas the Rhymer (1990) is a standalone fantasy novel by Ellen Kushner, retelling the Scottish border ballad of the same name about the poet and prophet Thomas of Erceldoune. A mortal bard is taken into Elfland by its Queen after a chance meeting, and pays for the gift of true speech she grants him in a way he does not expect once he returns to the mortal world. The novel is narrated in shifting first-person voices, moving between Thomas and the people around him, in a style drawn from oral balladry and traditional storytelling rather than conventional epic fantasy structure. It is Ellen Kushner's second distinct universe in this database alongside her Riverside series, and the author has confirmed it is a wholly separate setting with no shared characters or continuity.
