Overview
Un Lun Dun (2007) is a standalone young-adult novel by China Miéville, confirmed to be wholly separate from his Bas-Lag/New Crobuzon setting. It is set in UnLondon, a surreal mirror-world version of London reached through a crack in reality, populated by broken umbrellas, sentient rubbish, and a cast of odd, dryly comic inhabitants who treat the city's absurdities as ordinary fact. The novel is notable for subverting the "chosen one" structure common to portal fantasy, deliberately sidelining its apparently prophesied hero partway through in favor of her more ordinary friend, an inversion Miéville has cited as a direct response to genre expectations set by works like Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere and Lewis Carroll's Alice books. It won the 2008 Locus Award for Best Young Adult Book and has since been the subject of academic scholarship examining its treatment of narrative expectation and its child reader.
