Overview
A standalone historical fantasy set in a Tang-dynasty-China-inspired empire, following a young man who inherits an extraordinary and politically dangerous gift of 250 Sardian horses in gratitude for burying his father's war dead. Its fictional world reappears roughly 400 years later, and wholly independently, in Kay's own River of Stars (2013).

Core Canon: Reading Order (1 work) counts toward ranking
Under Heaven (2010) core · 4.17 (17,257 ratings); single-work: a standalone, fully-resolved novel (Viking Canada, 2010) set in a Tang-dynasty-China-inspired world. Kay's River of Stars (2013) shares the same fictional world, set roughly 400 years later, but tells a wholly independent story with no shared characters or plot -- not researched or registered; flagged as a possible future companion admission (the Bas-Lag same-world-independent-story pattern, not a direct sequel).
