Overview
Guy Gavriel Kay's Kitai, an empire modelled on imperial China, catalogued as one universe across two standalone novels some four centuries apart. Under Heaven (2010), set in a Kitai resembling Tang-dynasty China, follows Shen Tai, who inherits a politically dangerous gift of 250 Sardian horses in return for two years spent burying the war dead of a forgotten battlefield, and is drawn into the court intrigues that precede civil war. River of Stars (2013), set in a Kitai resembling the Northern Song, follows the outlaw-turned-general Ren Daiyan and the poet Lin Shan as the diminished empire faces invasion from the north. Kay has said this world is deliberately separate from that of The Lions of Al-Rassan and the Sarantine Mosaic.
