Overview

Zothique is Clark Ashton Smith's dying-earth story cycle, set on Earth's last, decaying continent under a dimming sun. Written mainly for Weird Tales between 1932 and 1935, with a handful of later additions extending into the early 1950s, the cycle eventually grew to sixteen finished stories plus additional verse, following sorcerers, necromancers, and doomed wanderers through a baroque, morbidly ornate world nearing its final twilight, where magic has supplanted science and civilizations exist only to exhaust themselves before oblivion. Smith's prose is dense with archaic vocabulary and grotesque, sensual imagery, maintaining an amoral narrative distance even in scenes of violence or supernatural horror, and treating death throughout as final rather than a doorway to renewal. The cycle is widely credited as a foundational influence on the dying-earth subgenre, with Jack Vance's later Dying Earth books following its conventions of terminal civilizational decline; together the two are regarded as the twin foundations of dying-earth fantasy within pulp-era weird fiction.
