Ann Carol Tickell, known professionally as A. C. Crispin, was born April 5, 1950, in Stamford, Connecticut. She earned her degree from the University of Maryland, began writing in 1978, and launched her professional publishing career in 1983. Crispin became renowned for writing tie-in novels that, in the words of critics, developed "the backgrounds and emotional lives of on-screen characters," authoring twenty-three published novels across science fiction and screen novelization genres. Beyond writing, she served as Eastern Regional Director and Vice President of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, and in 1998 she co-founded Writer Beware with Victoria Strauss, an anti-scam watchdog organization that has assisted law enforcement in shutting down publishing schemes targeting aspiring authors. Her most celebrated works include the Star Trek novels Yesterday's Son, the first non-novelization Star Trek novel to reach the New York Times Best Seller list, and Sarek; the Han Solo Trilogy for Star Wars; and Pirates of the Caribbean: The Price of Freedom. She also created the original StarBridge science fiction series for young readers. In April 2013, the International Association of Media Tie-In Writers named her a Grandmaster. She died September 6, 2013, at age 63 in Waldorf, Maryland, after battling bladder cancer, just three days after posting a farewell message online.
