Andrea Stewart is a fantasy author and the daughter of immigrants who was raised in various locations across the United States and now resides in California. Before her novel-writing career, she published short fiction in respected speculative-fiction venues including Beneath Ceaseless Skies, Daily Science Fiction, and Galaxy's Edge. Her debut novel, The Bone Shard Daughter, launched The Drowning Empire trilogy, an epic fantasy series centered on a hidden empire ruled through bone-shard magic and the constructed creatures it animates; the trilogy became a Sunday Times bestseller. The Bone Shard Daughter was a finalist for the Locus Award for Best First Novel and the British Fantasy Award for Best Novel, reflecting strong critical reception for its inventive magic system and political intrigue. She has since begun developing a new fantasy series, The Hollow Covenant trilogy, extending her exploration of empire, identity, and constructed magic systems, and has an upcoming thriller scheduled for release in 2026. Stewart is known within the fantasy community for combining tightly plotted political intrigue with unusual, biologically grounded magic systems, and for centering morally complex characters navigating questions of imperial power and personal autonomy. Outside of writing, she has described her interests as including birdwatching and falling down research rabbit holes that often inform the depth of her worldbuilding.
