Anna-Marie McLemore is a Mexican-American author who identifies as queer, nonbinary, and bigender, using they/them pronouns, and is married to a transgender husband. Active as a published novelist since 2011, when they were named a Lambda Literary Emerging Writer Fellow, McLemore writes young-adult fiction that blends magical realism with richly inclusive, own-voices narratives, drawing heavily on their Latinx heritage and citing authors including Laura Esquivel, Isabel Allende, and Federico García Lorca as key influences; their prose frequently incorporates Spanish and French language and imagery. Their debut novel, The Weight of Feathers (2015), uses a magical-realist frame to explore discrimination between two rival traveling families. When the Moon Was Ours (2016) reimagines classic fairy-tale motifs around a transgender Pakistani-American protagonist and won both the James Tiptree Jr. Award and a Stonewall Honor, alongside a William C. Morris Award finalist placement and National Book Award longlisting. Wild Beauty (2017) follows a family bound by a generations-long curse tied to a magical garden, while Blanca & Roja (2018) reworks the Swan Lake myth through a Latinx lens, and Self-Made Boys (2022) offers a transgender-centered remix of The Great Gatsby. McLemore's short fiction has also been recognized at the highest levels of young-adult publishing; their contribution to the anthology The Collectors: Stories helped that collection win the Michael L. Printz Award in 2024, cementing McLemore's reputation as one of the leading voices in contemporary queer, Latinx-centered magical realism.
