Overview
A magical-realist young-adult novel reimagining Swan Lake and Snow-White-and-Rose-Red as the story of two Latinx sisters bound by a family curse and a boy who can transform into a bear, alongside a non-binary character who transforms into a swan. Anna-Marie McLemore's Blanca & Roja (2018) received starred reviews from Kirkus, School Library Journal, and Booklist. The novel weaves its fairy-tale sources together around a curse that has claimed one sister from every generation of the family, turning her into a swan, forcing Blanca and Roja to confront which of them the curse will take even as both fall into unexpected relationships with two local boys whose own family carries a parallel bear-transformation legacy. McLemore's prose leans into a dense, lyrical magical-realist style consistent with the rest of their body of work.
