Overview
A dark fairy-tale novel by Australian author Margo Lanagan, published in 2008. Loosely inspired by the Brothers Grimm tale "Snow-White and Rose-Red," it follows Liga, a young woman who survives severe abuse and finds refuge for herself and her two daughters in a magical hidden realm. As the boundary between that sanctuary and the ordinary world wears thin, the family is forced to confront the world, and the past, they had escaped. The novel won the 2009 World Fantasy Award for Best Novel (jointly) and the 2009 Ditmar Award for Best Novel, was named a Michael L. Printz Award Honor Book for young-adult literature, and was a finalist for the Shirley Jackson and Aurealis Awards.
