Margo Lanagan was born in 1960 in Waratah, New South Wales, Australia. She grew up in Raymond Terrace before her family moved to Melbourne in the early 1970s, and she later relocated to Sydney in 1982 after a period of overseas travel. An Australian author known especially for short fiction and young adult work spanning fantasy, horror, and children's literature, she attended the Clarion West Writers Workshop in 1999 and later taught there in 2011 and 2013. Her short story collection Black Juice (2004) won two World Fantasy Awards and a Printz Honor, and her follow-up collection White Time (2006) was named a Best Book for Young Adults by the American Library Association. Her novel Tender Morsels (2008), a dark reimagining of the fairy tale 'Snow White and Rose Red,' received a Printz Honor and won the World Fantasy Award for Best Novel in 2009.
