Synopsis
Tender Morsels, published by Margo Lanagan in 2008, is based loosely on the Brothers Grimm tale Snow-White and Rose-Red. Liga is a traumatized fifteen-year-old girl who has suffered severe abuse at the hands of those meant to protect her, and who, in her desperation to escape her circumstances, finds herself transported into a magical, sheltered refuge cut off from the ordinary world. There she raises two daughters in safety and peace, shielded from the dangers and cruelty that marked her own earlier life, for years undisturbed by the world she left behind. As the barrier separating her sanctuary from reality gradually begins to weaken, figures and dangers from the outside world start to find their way in, threatening the protective isolation Liga has built for herself and her daughters and forcing a reckoning she has spent years avoiding.
