Charles R. Saunders was born July 12, 1946, in Elizabeth, Pennsylvania, and grew up in Norristown before relocating to Canada to avoid military conscription during the Vietnam War. He earned a psychology degree from Lincoln University in 1968. Saunders worked as a civil servant and teacher in Ontario and Ottawa before settling in Nova Scotia in 1985. From 1989 to 2008 he worked as a copy editor and columnist for the Halifax Daily News, writing unsigned editorials and his own columns in longhand, and he authored four nonfiction books documenting the history of Nova Scotia's Black community. Saunders is recognized as a pioneering creator of the "sword and soul" fantasy subgenre, having developed the fictional African-inspired continent of Nyumbani, meaning "home" in Swahili, as the setting for his fiction. His Imaro series, which began as short stories in 1974, evolved into four novels published between 1981 and 2009, following a warrior modeled on figures from African history and legend. He also created the character Dossouye, a warrior inspired by historical West African female fighters. After the Daily News closed in 2008, Saunders lived in relative isolation in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, with limited resources. He died in May 2020, though news of his death was not widely reported until September, and he was posthumously inducted into the CSSFA Hall of Fame in 2025.
