Synopsis

The Quest for Cush continues Charles R. Saunders's Imaro saga on the fantasy continent of Nyumbani. After being betrayed by the bandit tribe he had come to lead, the warrior Imaro sets out seeking both vengeance and his abducted lover Tanisha, whose captivity is bound up with the dark forces that have shadowed him since birth. His path takes him through the lawless City of Madness, where he gains a scholarly ally, the Bambuti sage Pomphis, whose knowledge points him toward the legendary city of Cush as the place where he might finally learn the truth behind the powers working against him.

Notes

  • From the series record (Imaro): Founding work of the 'Sword and Soul' subgenre: African-inspired heroic fantasy created explicitly as an alternative to the genre's default pseudo-medieval-European settings. No award wins or nominations could be independently corroborated for this series; it is admitted on documented genre-historical significance (the first African-diaspora sword-and-sorcery hero in the genre, widely cited as founding a subgenre later authors built on) rather than an award record.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings, but they resolve to the exact same sequence for this book, so one combined line is shown instead of two identical ones.

  • Reading order, within the series Imaro: position 2 of 4: previous Imaro (1981) · next The Trail of Bohu (1985)
