Daniel O'Malley is an Australian author born and raised in Canberra. He completed an undergraduate degree at Michigan State University and a master's degree in medieval history at Ohio State University before returning to Australia, where he worked for the Australian Transport Safety Bureau writing press releases and acting as a spokesman. O'Malley is best known for his debut novel, The Rook (2012), the first installment of the Checquy Files series, which follows a woman who wakes with amnesia to discover she is a high-ranking agent in a secret British organization staffed by operatives with supernatural abilities. The novel won the 2012 Aurealis Award for Best Science Fiction Novel and was later adapted into a Starz television miniseries starring Emma Greenwell. O'Malley continued the series with Stiletto (2016) and Take Flight (2022), further developing the Checquy's blend of bureaucratic satire and urban fantasy. His work is notable for combining wry humor with high-stakes supernatural intrigue, distinguishing it within the broader urban fantasy genre. O'Malley maintains an online presence through the Checquy Files fan site rookfiles.com, and continues to write fiction exploring secret government agencies and hidden supernatural worlds intersecting with modern institutional life.
