Elizabeth A. Lynn, born in 1946, is an American writer widely regarded as a pioneering figure in speculative fiction for her early and groundbreaking inclusion of gay and lesbian characters in fantasy and science fiction, at a time when such representation was almost entirely absent from the genre. Her influence was significant enough that the LGBT bookstore chain A Different Light took its name directly from her 1978 novel of the same title. Lynn is best known for the Chronicles of Tornor, a fantasy trilogy comprising Watchtower, The Dancers of Arun, and The Northern Girl, published between 1979 and 1980, set in a war-torn secondary world and notable for depicting same-sex relationships, particularly between men, as natural and sympathetically portrayed elements of its fictional society, a striking departure from genre conventions of the period. The first volume, Watchtower, won the World Fantasy Award for Best Novel in 1980, a landmark achievement for explicitly queer fantasy fiction. Her short story "The Woman Who Loved the Moon" also received World Fantasy Award recognition. Lynn later returned to fantasy with the Karadur Atani series, comprising Dragon's Winter and Dragon's Treasure, which likewise centered gay relationships within its epic fantasy narrative. Across her body of work, Lynn is credited with expanding the possibilities of what fantasy fiction could depict regarding sexuality and identity, laying groundwork that later generations of queer speculative fiction writers would build upon.
