Elizabeth Bear, born Sarah Bear Elizabeth Wishnevsky on September 22, 1971, in Hartford, Connecticut, studied English and anthropology at the University of Connecticut without completing a degree. Before committing fully to writing in 2001, she worked as a technical writer, stable hand, reporter, and office administrator, having sold her first stories in the 1990s. She is among a small group of writers to win multiple Hugo Awards after receiving the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer (2005), a company that includes C. J. Cherryh, Orson Scott Card, and Mary Robinette Kowal. Bear's debut novel, Hammered (2005), launched the Jenny Casey trilogy, and she has since built an expansive body of work across series including the Promethean Age novels, the Jacob's Ladder trilogy, the Eternal Sky trilogy, the Lotus Kingdoms, and White Space, alongside prolific short fiction. She won the Hugo Award for Best Short Story twice, for "Tideline" (2008) and "Shoggoths in Bloom" (2009), and received a Locus Award for Best First Novel in 2006, as well as multiple Gaylactic Spectrum Awards. She has also contributed to the Hugo-winning SF Squeecast podcast. Bear frequently collaborates with fellow author Sarah Monette, notably on the Iskryne series, and teaches at workshops including Viable Paradise and Clarion West. She married novelist Scott Lynch in October 2016. Her fiction ranges widely across science fiction, epic fantasy, and urban fantasy, marked by dense worldbuilding and morally complex characters.
