Evan Winter was born in England to South American parents of African descent and was raised in Zambia; he now lives in Canada. Before turning to writing full time, he worked as a filmmaker, creative director, and bartender. His 2017 novel The Rage of Dragons, an epic fantasy drawing on southern African history and culture, was originally self-published before Orbit Books acquired it and signed him to a four-book deal; he followed it with The Fires of Vengeance (2020), with a further volume, The Lord of Demons, planned. In 2020, Time magazine named The Rage of Dragons one of the 100 best fantasy books of all time, and the novel was included on that year's Canada Reads longlist.
