Synopsis
The second book in Evan Winter's The Burning series finds Tau and his Queen facing an impending attack on the Omehi capital, forcing them to craft a risky plan that could buy time for Queen Tsiora to assemble her scattered forces. Tsiora's own sister has been propped up in the capital as a rival true Queen, plunging the Omehi into a civil war that threatens their people's survival even as the external military pressure that has defined their nearly two-century war continues unabated. Tau, now a seasoned and formidable fighter, must weigh his personal drive for vengeance against the demands of the unfolding conflict as he and Tsiora work to reclaim the capital and reunite a fracturing nation before their enemies can exploit the divide.

Notes
- From the series record (The Burning): New author record. An African-inspired epic fantasy trilogy (the Omehi people's caste-bound, dragon-mounted warfare); no Hugo/Nebula/World Fantasy/Locus/British Fantasy recognition was found for either published book, but TIME named The Rage of Dragons one of its '100 Best Fantasy Books of All Time' (2020) and it was longlisted for CBC's Canada Reads (2020) -- both noted here in prose as critical-reception signals, not registered as AWD rows (neither is a genre-fiction literary award). Core = the 2 published books only; the trilogy's concluding volume, The Lord of Demons, is announced for October 6, 2026 but not yet published as of the latest update -- isn't counted here yet. In progress.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
