Synopsis

In a world where the Omehi people have fought a nearly two-century war for survival, only a small number of women, the Gifted, can summon dragons, and a small number of men, the Ihashe and Indlovu, can gain enhanced fighting ability through a similar gift, leaving most people to serve as ordinary conscripted soldiers on the front lines. Tau, a young man born without any magical gift and looking down on by the ruling caste, initially plans a way to escape the fighting and the life expected of him. When those closest to him are killed in an act of casual cruelty by higher-caste rivals, Tau turns instead to training as a swordsman, driven by a burning desire for revenge against those he holds responsible, even as the odds of a giftless fighter surviving the brutal training ahead remain slim.

Where it sits

  • Universe: The Burning
  • Series: The Burning core; position 1 of 2 in the series' recorded order
  • Author: Evan Winter

Notes

  • From the series record (The Burning): New author record. An African-inspired epic fantasy trilogy (the Omehi people's caste-bound, dragon-mounted warfare); no Hugo/Nebula/World Fantasy/Locus/British Fantasy recognition was found for either published book, but TIME named The Rage of Dragons one of its '100 Best Fantasy Books of All Time' (2020) and it was longlisted for CBC's Canada Reads (2020) -- both noted here in prose as critical-reception signals, not registered as AWD rows (neither is a genre-fiction literary award). Core = the 2 published books only; the trilogy's concluding volume, The Lord of Demons, is announced for October 6, 2026 but not yet published as of the latest update -- isn't counted here yet. In progress.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
