Filipe Faria, born in Lisbon on February 11, 1982, is one of the best-known contemporary authors of Portuguese-language fantasy fiction. He was educated at the German School of Lisbon from kindergarten through secondary school. Faria emerged as a literary talent early, winning the Branquinho da Fonseca Prize, sponsored by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the newspaper Expresso, in 2001, followed by the Matilde Rosa Araújo Prize for Revelation in Children's and Young Adult Literature the following year, both significant early recognitions within Portugal's literary establishment. His literary debut came with As Crónicas de Allaryia (The Chronicles of Allaryia), a fantasy series that helped establish an original secondary-world fantasy tradition within Portuguese-language publishing, a market historically dominated by translated Anglophone fantasy. He went on to publish numerous additional fantasy novels, including A Manopla de Karasthan (2002), Os Filhos do Flagelo (2002), Marés Negras (2003), A Essência da Lâmina (2005), Vagas de Fogo (2007), O Fado da Sombra (2009), and Oblívio (2011), building a substantial and commercially successful body of epic fantasy work over the following decade. Faria is widely regarded as a significant and pioneering figure in Portuguese fantasy literature, credited with demonstrating that homegrown, Portuguese-authored epic fantasy could achieve both critical respect and popular commercial success in a market where the genre had previously been dominated almost entirely by foreign, translated authors.
