Jeffrey Ford was born November 8, 1955, in West Islip, New York, and studied at Binghamton University under novelist John Gardner, an experience that shaped his literary approach to speculative fiction. He has taught writing for many years, including a long tenure at Ohio Wesleyan University, alongside guest teaching stints at the Clarion Workshop (2004, 2012), the Stonecoast MFA program at the University of Southern Maine (2011), and Richard Hugo House in Seattle (2010). Ford is a prolific and widely acclaimed short story writer, with more than 130 stories published across major genre venues, and his fiction is frequently described as combining sweeping imaginative power with humor, dense literary allusion, and a recurring fascination with stories nested within stories. His novels include The Physiognomy (1997), the first in the surreal Well-Built City trilogy; The Portrait of Mrs. Charbuque (2002); The Shadow Year (2008); and Ahab's Return (2018). His acclaimed short story collections include The Empire of Ice Cream (2006), The Drowned Life (2008), and Crackpot Palace (2012). Ford has won numerous major genre honors, including multiple World Fantasy Awards—for The Physiognomy in 1998 and for the collection A Natural History of Hell in 2017—as well as Nebula Awards and Shirley Jackson Awards, alongside nominations for the Hugo and Locus Awards, establishing him as one of contemporary fantasy's most consistently celebrated short fiction writers.
