Overview
Cley, the state Physiognomist of the surreal, tyrannically-ruled Well-Built City, is exiled to investigate a strange affliction in a mining town and begins to see through the propaganda of the world he once enforced. A dreamlike, dystopian fantasy trilogy across The Physiognomy (1997), Memoranda (1999), and The Beyond (2001), Jeffrey Ford's first universe in this canon builds its world around physiognomy itself, the pseudoscience of judging character from facial features, elevated into the state religion of a totalitarian regime that Cley once enforced as an instrument of surveillance and punishment. The Physiognomy won the World Fantasy Award for Best Novel, and the trilogy as a whole is frequently cited for its surreal, almost hallucinatory imagery and its sustained interest in the ethics of a protagonist trying to atone for the harm his former position allowed him to inflict on others.
