Overview
Katherine Addison's (writing as Sarah Monette) dark secondary-world fantasy set in the city of Melusine, told in alternating first-person narration by the wizard Felix Harrowgate and his half-brother Mildmay, a professional cat burglar and assassin from the city's criminal underworld. Felix, driven mad and magically violated by a rival wizard's curse in the opening volume, spends much of the four-book sequence recovering his sanity and confronting the abusive past that made him vulnerable to that curse in the first place, with Mildmay drawn steadily deeper into his half-brother's dangerous magical and political entanglements as the story moves outward from Melusine to other cities across the four novels. Melusine (2005), The Virtu (2006), The Mirador (2007) and Corambis (2009) combine intricate secondary-world political worldbuilding with a sustained, unusually frank treatment of trauma and abuse for early-2000s epic fantasy.
