Synopsis
Having recovered, at least outwardly, from the abuse he suffered before the city of Mélusine, Felix Harrowgate is ready to reclaim the magical power and social status he lost during his breakdown, and sets out with his half-brother Mildmay and a young governess named Mildmay has taken under his protection to make the journey back to the city. Their return is bound up with restoring the Virtu, a shattered magical artifact central to the city's wizarding hierarchy, whose damage has left Mélusine's magic dangerously unstable in Felix's absence. As the three travelers make their way home, old tensions between Felix and Mildmay resurface even as both brothers are forced to confront how much the events of the first novel have changed them.
