Synopsis
The first novel in Sarah Monette's Doctrine of Labyrinths series follows Felix Harrowgate, a celebrated wizard of the city of Mélusine hiding a dark past of enslavement and sexual abuse at the hands of a former master, whose trauma resurfaces catastrophically and threatens to unravel the sanity and status he has built for himself at court. His estranged half-brother, Mildmay the Fox, a wanted assassin and thief who has spent his life on the opposite end of Mélusine's social order, is drawn into Felix's collapse largely against his own will. Fate throws the two brothers together on a difficult journey far from the city of Mélusine, forcing them to rely on each other despite years of separation and mutual distrust.
