Synopsis
The Beyond concludes the Well-Built City trilogy, following Cley as he ventures beyond the boundaries of the City and its surrounding territories explored in the earlier novels, into an unfamiliar wilderness shaped by the same strange, allegorical logic that has defined the series since The Physiognomy. Carrying forward the consequences of his earlier confrontation with Drachton Below and the pseudo-science of physiognomy that once structured his entire worldview, Cley must navigate this new, less charted territory while reckoning with how far he has moved from the man he was at the trilogy's start. The final volume brings the series' blend of surreal fantasy and political allegory to its conclusion, following Cley's journey to its furthest remove from the Well-Built City's original order.
