Joanne Harris is a British author born on 3 July 1964 in Barnsley, Yorkshire, to an English father and a French mother. She studied modern and medieval languages at St Catharine's College, Cambridge, and taught French for about fifteen years. Her 1999 novel Chocolat became a major success and was adapted as a film in 2000, which allowed her to write full time. She has written more than thirty books across several genres, and publishes her fantasy under the name Joanne M. Harris. Her fantasy draws heavily on Norse mythology, an interest that began with a children's retelling of the myths in childhood, and she later taught herself Old Norse to read the sources in the original. Her Rune novels include Runemarks, Runelight, The Gospel of Loki and The Testament of Loki.
