Synopsis
Maddy Smith lives in a village where the Order, a strict new religion, has banished magic and the old Norse gods. She has been marked since birth with a rune on her hand, which makes her an outcast, and she has secretly learned to use that magic, mostly to keep goblins in check. Her friend One-Eye, a wandering outsider, teaches her about the gods and their runes. He then asks her to open Red Horse Hill and go down into the World Below to recover a lost relic, warning that failure could bring about another apocalypse. The quest draws her into a confrontation between the surviving gods and the Order.
