José Antonio Cotrina was born July 8, 1972, in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain. He holds a degree in Advertising and Public Relations but chose to pursue fantasy writing instead of a career in advertising. Active as a published author since 1992, he began by publishing short stories in the early 1990s before releasing his first novel, The Lost Sources, in 2003, establishing himself within Spanish-language fantasy, science fiction, and horror. His work has since been translated into English, Polish, Czech, Italian, and Chinese, reflecting significant international reach for a Spanish genre author. His major works include the Between the Lines Universe series and the Cycle of the Red Moon trilogy, comprising The Harvest of Samhein, The Children of Darkness, The Shadow of the Moon, and Coda, as well as the standalone novels The Secret Song of the World and The House on the Black Hill. He has also collaborated with fellow Spanish authors Gabriella Campbell and Víctor Conde on joint projects. Critics have characterized his writing as distinguished by unusual settings, surprising plot twists, deep characterization, and a taste for the dark and macabre. Cotrina has been an unusually decorated figure within Spanish genre fiction, winning the Alberto Magno Award seven times (1998, 2000, 2002, 2005, 2007, 2011, and 2012), the UPC Award in 2000, the Domingo Santos Award in 2003, the Ignotus Award in 2005, and the Kelvin Award in 2017.
