M. John Harrison is an English novelist and critic, born in Warwickshire on 26 July 1945. In the late 1960s he met Michael Moorcock, then editing New Worlds, and from 1968 to 1975 served as the magazine's literary editor, writing sharp criticism of genre fiction, sometimes under the pseudonym Joyce Churchill. His first novel, The Committed Men, appeared in 1971, the same year as The Pastel City, the first book of the Viriconium sequence that he continued until 1984. His later work moved between genres: Climbers (1989), a novel about rock climbing, won the Boardman Tasker Prize, and the Kefahuchi Tract novels Light, Nova Swing and Empty Space returned him to science fiction, with Nova Swing winning the Arthur C. Clarke Award and the Philip K. Dick Award. He has long reviewed fiction for The Guardian, the Times Literary Supplement and other papers, and is often described as a genre contrarian whose work has shaped later weird and literary fantasy.
