Overview
M. John Harrison’s Viriconium sequence, written between 1971 and 1984, is set in and around a city at the far end of Earth’s history, where people live among the rusting remains of the vanished Afternoon Cultures and use weapons and machines they no longer understand. The first novel, The Pastel City, is close to a dying-earth adventure, but each later book remakes the city and its people, so that the same names return in different, unstable versions of the place. The sequence became a touchstone for later writers of weird and literary fantasy. In Viriconium (1982), published in the United States as The Floating Gods, was shortlisted for the Guardian Fiction Prize.
