Rebecca Yarros was born on April 13, 1981, in Washington, D.C., and studied European history and English at Troy University. She began writing while her husband was deployed to Afghanistan, and first published contemporary and military romance novels through traditional publishers including Entangled Publishing and Montlake before turning to fantasy. Her novel Fourth Wing (2023) introduced the Empyrean series, followed by Iron Flame (2023) and Onyx Storm (2025); the series is planned to run to five books. Fourth Wing spent more than a year on national hardcover fiction lists, and Onyx Storm sold over 2.7 million copies in its first week of release. Yarros received the 2024 Alex Award and a Dragon Award for fantasy, and a major studio, together with Michael B. Jordan's production company Outlier Society, acquired television rights to the series, with Yarros serving as a non-writing executive producer.
