Synopsis
Onyx Storm, published in January 2025, is Rebecca Yarros's third Empyrean novel, following Fourth Wing and Iron Flame. It picks up after Iron Flame, with Navarre and Poromiel forming a new, uneasy alliance with the revolutionary leaders of Tyrrendor against an escalating threat from the venin. Violet Sorrengail, bonded to two dragons, Tairn and Andarna, sets out on a mission south alongside Xaden Riorson and a handful of allies, tasked with gathering intelligence, locating dragons, and finding information that could turn the tide of the conflict. Balancing new alliances that are far from stable with old rivalries that refuse to fade, Violet and her companions navigate shifting politics and unfamiliar territory as the venin's forces press deeper into contested lands. With the fate of multiple kingdoms tied to their mission, Violet confronts dangers that extend well beyond the war college she once called home.

Notes
- From the series record (The Empyrean): New author record. The Empyrean (Fourth Wing, 2023; Iron Flame, 2023; Onyx Storm, 2025) is the current dragon-rider 'romantasy'/New Adult fantasy phenomenon that drove much of the BookTok-era genre's mainstream crossover -- explicitly named in Carlos's own brief for this batch. In progress: a 4th, untitled volume is publicly confirmed in development but has no publication date (multiple entertainment-press sources place it no earlier than 2027) -- isn't counted here yet.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
