Renée Ahdieh was born on July 7, 1983, and spent part of her early childhood in Seoul, South Korea, before her family settled in the United States. She earned her degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and now resides in Charlotte, North Carolina. An American-Korean writer specializing in young adult fantasy, she has been publishing since 2010. Her breakout series, The Wrath & the Dawn (2015) and its sequel The Rose & the Dagger (2016), reimagined the tales of One Thousand and One Nights and became a New York Times bestseller, earning Amazon's Best Young Adult Books of 2015 distinction, selection as a New York Public Library Best Book for Teens, and the 2015 Booklist Top Ten First Novel for Young Adults honor; film rights were optioned by Imagine Entertainment in 2017 and a Webtoon adaptation launched in 2019. She followed this success with the Flame in the Mist duology (2017–2018), drawing on East Asian storytelling traditions, and The Beautiful series beginning in 2019, a gothic fantasy set in 1872 New Orleans blending vampire lore with historical atmosphere. Ahdieh's fiction is noted for its lush, atmospheric prose and its grounding of fantastical plots in real-world cultural traditions and settings.
