S. E. Grove is the pen name of Sylvia Sellers-Garcia, a historian of Latin America who teaches at Boston College and specializes in colonial Guatemala. She began writing a young adult novel while working on a doctoral dissertation on early Central American history. Her historical training shaped the world-building of her debut, The Glass Sentence, the first book of the Mapmakers Trilogy, which she describes as a historian's fantasy about how distinct societies would look and how they would trade and use technology. She has studied cartography without practising it, and enjoys reading maps and working in archives. She has also written the novels The Waning Age and Armor for Liars. She lives in Massachusetts with her family.
