Samit Basu was born December 14, 1979, in Kolkata, India, to a Bengali family, and grew up in Calcutta. He attended Don Bosco School in Calcutta before studying economics at Presidency College, briefly attending the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, which he left to pursue writing, and later studied broadcasting and documentary filmmaking at the University of Westminster in London. Basu has worked as a novelist and filmmaker across science fiction, fantasy, superhero, and children's fiction since 2004; his sister, Sayoni Basu, co-founded the publisher Duckbill Books. His debut work, the GameWorld Trilogy, comprising The Simoqin Prophecies, The Manticore's Secret, and The Unwaba Revelations, established him as a leading voice in Indian speculative fiction, blending South Asian mythology with epic fantasy tropes. He followed this with the Metahuman duology, Turbulence and Resistance, exploring superpowers within an Indian context, and later wrote Chosen Spirits (2020), The City Inside (2022), and The Jinn-Bot of Shantiport (2023). Basu has also worked extensively in comics, co-authoring Untouchable with writer Mike Carey and creating UnHoli and Local Monsters, and co-directed and wrote Netflix's House Arrest (2019). He won the Wired Geekdad Goldenbot Award for Turbulence, and Chosen Spirits was shortlisted for the JCB Prize for Literature in 2020.
