Sofia Samatar was born October 24, 1971, in Indiana, to Somali scholar Said Sheikh Samatar and a Swiss-German Mennonite mother from North Dakota, who met in Mogadishu in 1970 while teaching English; Samatar was raised within the Mennonite tradition and attended a Mennonite high school. She earned a bachelor's degree in English from Goshen College, a master's degree in African languages and literature from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1997, and a Ph.D. in contemporary Arabic literature in 2013, and now serves as an associate professor of English at James Madison University. Her debut novel, A Stranger in Olondria (2013), launched her literary career and won both the British Fantasy Award and the World Fantasy Award in 2014, alongside the Crawford Award and the 2014 Astounding Award for Best New Writer, an unusually strong sweep for a debut. She followed it with the companion novel The Winged Histories (2016), the short story collection Tender (2017), and Monster Portraits (2018), a hybrid illustrated work co-created with her brother, artist Del Samatar. Her nonfiction memoir The White Mosque (2022), recounting a journey retracing a nineteenth-century Mennonite pilgrimage through Central Asia, won the 2023 Bernard J. Brommel Award for Biography and Memoir. Samatar's fiction is distinguished by its lush, poetic prose and its engagement with postcolonial themes, invented languages, and richly layered secondary-world mythologies, drawing on her multidisciplinary academic background in African and Arabic literature.
