Synopsis

The Winged Histories, published by Sofia Samatar in 2016, is a companion novel to A Stranger in Olondria rather than a direct sequel, set against the backdrop of a rebellion convulsing the Olondrian empire. The novel follows four women, a soldier, a scholar, a poet, and a woman of high society, whose lives intersect from opposing sides of the uprising as it spreads across the land. Each draws on different resources to survive and make sense of the conflict, one through martial skill, another through knowledge, another through art, and another through the standing her birth affords her, and their separate, overlapping accounts gradually assemble a fuller picture of events only glimpsed from a distance in the first novel. Together their stories examine how history gets made, and by whom, in the middle of a war none of them fully control.
